Retro-fitable single-point smart sensors. A researcher a the University of Washington has developed smart sensors — for water, gas and electricity — that can be attached to a single point in an existing house and that can monitor resource use by individual appliances. The technology monitors variability in the ‘signal’ — e.g., changes in water pressure and ‘shock wave’ form and propagation — and can infer which appliance was switched on/off…. http://www.technologyreview.com/computing/22947/?nlid=2140
